What does it feel like to have someone fall in love with you every week without ever having the possibility of real love in your life? Turned into a vampire as a college junior, Caroline has spent the last twenty years learning to survive and be invisible. Now she meets most of her prey through online dating. Recently returned to her hometown of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Caroline and the other local vampires scheme to escape their grinding poverty. She finds herself haunted by the memory of the enigmatic man who turned her into a vampire. And when he abruptly comes back into her life after her only non-vampire friend is brutally murdered, she can’t help thinking the events may somehow be connected.
Poet Shadow Watching Shadows Book 1 eBook Leigh Grossman
Caroline is a vampire. She doesn't understand how immortal vampires live such lavish and well funded lives in movies. Her reality is filled with cleaning hotels rooms at night, finding her meals (hopeless romantic boys in their early 20's) through online dating, and hoping that the all vampire investment club she belongs to makes some money soon. After several years of loneliness, one-night stands, living in poverty and boredom, a man from Caroline's past comes back into her life, and everything begins to change.
The writing is amazing, that characters are compelling and the story is intriguing. The lost, purposeless, feeling Caroline has is something a lot of people in their 20's feels--even if they aren't vampires. She is easy to relate to and it is fun to see the world from her perspective. She has to manipulate everyone in her life by acting like the person they want her to be or expect that she is, and can't let anyone in. After living like that for years, she doesn't really know who she is anymore. This story is about what happens to make her start looking for herself.
My only complaint about this novella is that I want more of the story now! I will be impatiently awaiting the second part of Caroline's adventure.
